Research Blog #9 - Argument & Counterargument

My Argument: In my paper, I explained that scientists like astrobiologists, ufologists, and astronomers of many different generations have tried their best to understand and learn about space and get a possible answer to the question: are we alone in the universe? Many conspiracy theorists have tried to use their observations and opinions to come up with different explanations as to whether or not aliens exist. But over decades, since the U.S. government started to search for extraterrestrial intelligence, the research and project did not have much progress, due to the boundary work between SETI scientists and ufologists and other external effects. The boundaries that hinder these scientists from collaborating with each other, limit the many possible discoveries on the outer space.  A counter-argument of ufology being considered a pseudoscience is : Ufologists are not just ordinary people who are digging information and analyzing their findings to understand things that they ...

Research Blog #8 - Case

Image
This is an image of  plaques that were made of gold-coated aluminum which carried outlines of a human male and female. These two plaques were carried on satellites that tried to communicate with other intelligent life in the universe. The satellites also carried the drawn structure of Hydrogen so that only intelligent life forms can comprehend the message and understand we as human beings trying to be friendly.  Elani indicates that  this way has not yet given a solid amount of evidence that can change the way people see space. Nor is there any answer to the mystery of whether we are alone in the universe or not. However, it doesn’t mean that it would be a waste to understand what kinds of changes can be seen in the world itself, if some way or another, it is proven that humans are not the only ones living in the Universe. Whatever the reason, scientists, in fact, are looking forward to exploring whether there is life outside our planet Earth. But under governmenta...

Research Blog #7: Theoretical Frame

Image
My theoretical frame is based on the article, "What Can Scientists Learn from Alien Hunters". It organizes the fields of studies where astrobiologists and astronomers were on, based on their methods of systematic experimentation. The article directly points out the reason for the boundary work was because of their various approaches to scientific researches on extraterrestrials life topics. By analyzing their methods on scientific studies and looking deep at some political influences, I could conclude with how does the boundary-work affects the study progress on extraterrestrial life for over decades.

Boundary-work and the demarcation of science from non-science: Strains and interests in professional ideologies of scientists.  American sociological review , 781-795. "Boundary-work" describes an ideological style found in scientists' attempts to create a public image for science by contrasting it favorably to non-scientific intellectual or technical activities.
